Psychiatric disorders are common in the community. Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders are common in all regions of the world, affecting every community and age group across all income countries. On comparing the Indian epidemiological studies to any international epidemiological studies, it is found that prevalence rates reported in India are very low. They constitute a wide spectrum ranging from sub-clinical states to very severe forms of disorders.Very few case control studies has been done to confirm the various hypothesis related to risk factors. None of the case control study has been conducted in Gujarat on mental illness. Identification of risk factors is important so as to formulate the policy for prevention and control of mental illness. Specific measures can be directed towards at risk individuals and it can reduce the mental health disease load in community. With this in mind and to bridge the gap a case control study has been done
