The area is marked by a number of shrines, temples, altars and churches today from throughout its history. The location was lost due to the city´s growth and development over a thousand years, but was excavated at the turn of the twentieth century. It is the location of the Curia Julia and its predecessor, the Curia Hostilia, the seat of the Roman Senate. It was an open air market and gathering place, but was originally the meeting place of the Curiate Assembly.
